In the early 1950’s, Herman Otto constructed a nine-hole course in the timberlands of Northern Michigan just south of Lewiston. Over the next three decades, the original design was expanded to include a total of 54 holes. In the 1990’s the Fountains course opened, giving the resort 72 holes of spectacular golf. Subdivisions, second homes, a one-mile paved airstrip and in fact an entire community grew up around the original vision and became one of Michigan’s most acclaimed golf resorts. A combination of factors caused hardships for the property and in 2009 the resort was purchased by new owners. A multi-million dollar renovation and improvement program started and was completed in 2011. In 2015 new management arrived on property and the turnaround has been dramatic. Garland ranks 4 ½ stars by reviewers of both GolfAdvisor.com and TripAdvisor.com. As one regular visitor said in August 2017, “I’ve been playing golf at Garland for forty years, and the courses and service have never been better!”
Garland Resort provides the ultimate combination of golf, accommodations, location, dining, activities, and value in the entire state of Michigan. And almost certainly a good many states beyond. If you have a regular group of golf guys, couples, a golf league or just want to get away with a few of your favorite friends, Garland is the PERFECT location for your next trip.
The natural backdrop of 2,000 acres of unspoiled Michigan wilderness provides a perfect setting for Garland’s four courses. Rolling meadows, lakes, streams, mature hardwoods and dramatic elevation changes are the backdrops to challenges that delight golfers of all abilities. You’ll see plenty of birdies and eagles at Garland even if they are not on your scorecard. In fact, we have bald eagles nesting on our courses, as well as hawks and wild turkey. You’ll love the way Garland’s courses weave their way through the pristine terrain teaming with wildlife. Each hole at Garland has its own unique character and design, combining many classic features with some innovations not found on other courses. For example – both the Fountains and Reflections layouts offer the unique combination of six par 3s, 4s and 5s, increasing both your chance for a hole-in-one and birdies!
Let’s take a closer look at the courses…
Challenge the Gods of Atlantis on Swampfire
Swampfire is a pretty accurate name for this course. A real test of your will and patience, the course features water and more water, on all but two holes. Swampfire fits naturally into its environment with its bluegrass fairways and bent grassgreens providing a perfect playing surface. Gently rolling terrain winds its way through acres of natural ponds, lakes and wetlands. It may not be the longest of their courses, but it’s a true test of your driving accuracy and shot-making ability. For those up to the challenge, a good round on Swampfire is one you will cherish forever!
Play with Deer, Bears, Eagles and the Occasional Slash, on Monarch, a True Championship Test of Your Skills!
Monarch is the “king” of the quartet; it’s as magnificent as it is long, nearly 7,200 yards from the tips. Some assume the name of the course refers to its length. It’s actually named for the towering red and white pines that adorn the fairways. This is a true championship test of golf with one of the strongest combination of finishing holes you will find anywhere. In fact, the entire back nine is just one great hole after another. Yet, as good as the finish is, the 1 and 2 rank as the two hardest holes on the course, so there is little time to find your game if you don’t bring it with you. Even if your card is low on birdies look up to the left on the 11th hole, about halfway down the fairway and you might just see the awesome sight of their resident bald eagles at play!
Reflections is The “Thinking Man’s” Course Where Strategy Not Brute Force Is Paramount to Your Success
Reflections seems strangely named. Normally you think of reflections in a pool of water, but this course actually has the least amount of water of our four. Perhaps it has something to do with the serenity you feel as you play the course, who knows? Anyway, similar in length to Fountains, it’s also a similar layout with six sets of par-3s, par-4s and par-5s. The variety of the holes is matched by the variety of the terrain, numerous doglegs, and tight driving areas. In fact, Reflections is certainly a course that rewards accuracy over length and despite being their shortest course, offers delight and disaster in equal measures!
Beyond the Merely Famous There Are Legends – Fountains is Indeed a Masterpiece of Golfing Art!
True to its name, the course features numerous fountains in the many water hazards that highlight the rolling terrain. Renowned for its scenic beauty, the Fountains Course also challenges the better player with a mix of holes that place an emphasis on strategy around the greens. Incorporating some of Garland’s original nine holes, it’s a testimony to the harmonious relationship between land and golf. At nearly 6,800 yards, it offers six-packs of par-3s, par- 4s and par-5s for a truly unique and enjoyable combination of golf!
Just Park and Play- Everything is in Walking Distance!
Once you get to Garland, just relax and enjoy because unlike a lot of today’s mega-resorts, all four of their courses start from the same golf shop. That means no hassle, no transfers, no loading up or waiting for Joe. Just get out and play golf until you can’t see the ball. You’ll also find our bars, restaurants, and entertainment just a few feet away from the Pro shop. And if things get a little hectic after the round, most of our accommodations are within easy stumbling distance of the bar, so you live to fight another day!
